Mr. Fancy Plants Nursery is a backyard nursery specializing in daylilies owned and operated by Mike McDonald.  My wife Diane and I live on 3 acres with our seven dogs, two cats and 20 or so chickens.  The dogs are mostly rescues and demand much of our attention.  We welcome visitors by appointment only.  Although our dogs are friendly, they overwhelm most visitors so we need to confine them before visitors arrive-thus our requirment for appointments.

My love of the daylily started when Diane and I went on a daylily tour in southern Ohio several years ago.  I have always loved gardening, but went crazy after being introduced to the many spectacular varieties of daylilies.

At the constant pressure from my wife, I left my job working in a cubicle in an office (that I did not enjoy) to take time to decide what I want to be when I grow up.  She suggested that I focus my time on growing and hybridizing daylilies(and caring for the critters).  After visiting several daylily farms and getting plenty of advice, I decided to make a go of it.  I'm convinced that there are no friendlier or helpful people than daylily hybriidizers. Everyone I've met have been wonderful.  I hope to defray the cost of my hybridizing program by selling some of our daylilies.

We have several daylily beds with over 200 varieties, and are constantly adding more.  My primary focus in hybridizing is developing vigorous plants with good habits and beautiful flowers.  I'm particularly fond of large flowered, tall tetraploids. We believe in being as organic and self sustaining as possible. We liberally use compost on all of our beds. Our water is provided by collected rain water and from an artesian well. So far the well has not dried up even during summer droughts. We use no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, but do use some spot treatment for weed control.  

The chickens are Diane's hobby gone haywire. We encourage anyone to have some backyard chickens. The chickens do not take much space or have many needs. The fresh eggs they provide are so much better than those in the grocery store. We will be selling some of our surplus hatching eggs and some chicks as we have them. We are NPIP certified #122.
